Have you heard of the van life? Is it a realistic way to live? What are the drawbacks? Let’s explore van life?

What Is Van Life?

Van life is a lifestyle of living in a vehicle either full or part time. It’s adopted by many nomads looking for an alternative lifestyle or anyone looking to live a basic life.

Van life is usually derived from a modified cargo or camping van that has basic amenities. It can also include RV’s, SUV’s, school buses as well as box trucks that have been modified. A small number of people have even modified old ambulances.

Some people live the van life by choice. They’re seeking freedom as well as mobility without paying a lot of money for housing. However, there are others who live the van life because they have no other choice.

Van life has been an ongoing social movement for a while, but since 2020 it’s been growing even more.

It’s a movement being led by gen X, millennials as well as gen Z. However, there are a growing number of boomers becoming part of the van life movement.

What Are Some Reasons?

Let’s explore some reasons for van life!

As mentioned before, people get into van life for a variety of reasons. For some people, it’s by choice and for others it’s out of necessity.

Reasons Include:

  1. Working Remotely: Some people who work remotely either full time or part time are a big part of the van life movement. If they’re able to power their devices and have access to wi-fi, location doesn’t matter. They can work next to a lake if they want.

  2. Save Money On Housing: Van life is partly being fueled by the shortage of affordable housing. Some people live the van life by choice in order to save for a down payment for a house. There are others that have to live the van life to avoid being homeless.

  3. For More Freedom: Van life is appealing for many people because of the freedom it provides. It’s a life that doesn’t require a mortgage and it’s liberating to travel to wherever you want.

  4. Personal Growth: For most people, full time van life is not a long-term commitment. However, it provides an opportunity for personal growth because you need to learn how to make it work.

  5. COVID-19 Restrictions: Depending on where you live, there might be restrictions imposed because of COVID-19. If you can’t enjoy where you live, van life allows you to pack up and go somewhere else with no restrictions.

  6. Simpler Life: Van life is popular with anyone who wants to simplify their lives. It forces you to downsize because of the limited amount of space. However, having less stuff and living simply works for a lot of people.

Is Van Life Realistic?

Let’s explore how realistic it is to live the van life.

It’s a realistic way to live that’s simpler, cheaper as well as flexible. It’s a cleaver way to save on rent and bills, also it’s a great way to work remotely and travel on a budget.

In order for van life to work, it takes a lot of planning. However, not all people will be able to make it work and won’t be able to deal with the drawbacks of van life.

What Are Some Drawbacks?

Van life is not always easy because of drawbacks. They include being confined to a limited space, being unable to take regular showers, having to adjust your toilet habits, the possibility of your vehicle breaking down or even not having access to regular wi-fi.

Van life requires you to be confined to a limited space for a long period of time. It can get really hard when you’re traveling with other people, especially when you’re all stressed at the same time.

It can be hard to take regular showers because of the limited availability of water in your vehicle. Unless you want to just take cold showers, you’d need to stop somewhere either for briefly or overnight to take a hot shower.

Van life gets hard when you have to adjust how much you go to the bathroom. A vehicle usually has a septic tank with limited capacity and it’s up to you to maintain it.

There’s a chance that in the future, your vehicle is going to need repairs or breakdown. It’s not only stressful, it can be expensive.

If you’re working remotely while living the van life, it can be tough. Some places may not have reliable internet and you need to make sure that you have a reliable power source for your devices.

Don’t let these drawbacks discourage you, especially if you’re a flexible person who can make van life work.
